After losing the “Facebook deal” to Microsoft , Google came out with their counter-attack strategy for Facebook – OpenSocial or O/S . Apparently, it was the best bet against the social-network giant Facebook among all the possible strategies Google can adopt. I believe Facebook was on average the “2.5th” online social network that 80% of Facebook users have tried out. Migrating online social networks is a pain in the ass.

OpenSocket , a project to host open-source projects to bridge Facebook and OpenSocial, the effectiveness of OpenSocial is severely limited. Popular applications developed on OpenSocial can be replicated by OpenSocket, and it will only make it easier for other online social networks to migrate over to Facebook. It will work the other way round, but I don’t believe many Facebook users will switch.

What will Google do next? I’m skeptical about OpenSocial, but I’m defintely looking forward to Android , the open platform for creating mobile device applications!
